CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

The time off ended too soon for Bernard. He’d cherished having quiet moments with his wife—caring for her, reading to her, showing her how much he loved her. She told him she was fine—that Lundil would keep her company and Jilliad would keep a watchful eye—but Bernard’s heart ached as he went to Eloekim’s council chamber. Bernard’s father-in-law had already arrived.

“Bernard. You look troubled,” the older man greeted him.

“My heart is heavy, Filrian. I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

Filrian took a deep breath. “You’re going to grieve, and you may even be angry. And then you’ll get up every morning, and you’ll be a father to Lucy. You’ll continue on in the work set out for you. It will be the most difficult thing of your life. But if Abneriel calls you to such a life, He will sustain you in it, as He’s done for me. I’m still praying He will be gracious to you in not making you walk through that.” Filrian fell silent. Stonelock and Colin entered with the queen and her nephews just behind. Bernard took care to hide his distress from her.

“Good morning. How are you feeling today?” he asked.

“Refreshed, thank you. I suppose we ought to get to this labor law business.” Brendamina sat down and picked up one of Joseph Halstone’s letters. Her thoughts went to her friends, Ephraim and Eleanor Halstone and their children. Last time she heard from them, they were all well. She smiled, knowing Eloekim’s inquiries about Calbeth’s labor laws would have first reached Ephraim since he handled communications and relations with the other kingdoms. Ephraim knew his father would be best at providing Eloekim with the insight he needed.

The smile faded as Brendamina held the letter. Now it was up to her to glean insight and reform these laws. Would she be able to do it as well as Eloekim? Would he approve of the changes she made? What if she made things worse? She stopped herself. Bernard and the other advisors knew her husband well. They’d worked on reforming laws with him before and knew what he’d expect. The lines in her forehead eased when Wesley and Morgan entered the chamber.

“Your Majesty, I trust you’re feeling better?” Wesley said with a bow.

“Much better. Thank you for coming.”

Brendamina asked Filrian to begin their time in prayer, and their meeting commenced. Stonelock took notes while they discussed the issues, Ezra and Noah located and read aloud desired documents from where they lay on the table, and Brendamina alternated from sitting to walking the length of the room as they all talked. She noted that everyone observed her closely, watchful for any signs she was overdoing it. Part of her felt irked. The other part of her was grateful for their care.

By mid-morning, Bernard insisted they stop for a short break. The room felt stuffy, so he opened the windows and took a deep breath of fresh air. Wesley stepped to his side.

“Her Majesty has you worried,” he stated quietly.
